Scarborough,
Maine ... a few interesting facts and figures...
Scarborough was first called Owascoag, an Indian name meaning
"place of much grass." The present name is after Scarborough, England.
The first settlement in Scarborough was made a Prouts Neck in 1632
by Sir Thomas Cammock.
The second settlement was at Blue Point in 1636.
The third settlement was at Dunstan in 1651 by Arthur and Andrew Alger o
land purchased from an Indian named Nagasqua. Land was purchased by
measure of how far a man could walk on a summer day. Dunstan was named
after Dunstan, England.
Scarborough was incorporated as a town on July 14, 1658 - the meeting to
incorporate was held at the Robert Jordan house.
The total area of Scarborough is 54 square miles.
